SINOPSIS

Adrian Sangeorzan (Bistrita, Romania, 1954) is an American physician, poet and fiction writer of Romanian origin. He graduated the Medical School of the University of Cluj and worked as a physician in communist Romania from 1978 until 1990, when he emigrated to the United States. He lives in New York and works as an obstetrician and gynecologist.

 

He is a contributor to the online magazine of International Literature (Words Without Borders), and a monthly for the Romanian literary magazine “Romanian Writing” (Scrisul Românesc). His poems have been translated into English, Chinese, French, German, Swedish, Arabic, Spanish, Polish, Bengali, Vietnamese, Uzbek, Italian.

 

Literary work:

His volume of memoirs and fiction «Between Two Worlds: stories of Woman Doctor» (2005) was first published in Romania in four editions. He published several collections of poems: “Masked World” (2020), “The Span of Memory” (2018), “The Anatomy of the Moon” (2010), “Tattoos on Marble” (2006), “Voices on a Razor’s Edge” (2003), “On the Lifeline” (2002).

The poetry book “Masked World” was published in Taiwan by the poet Kuei Shien Lee, four-time candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. “Masked World” was translated into German and presented at the Frankfurt International Book Fair in October 2022 in Germany.

 

He is also the author of the novels “Certificate of Virginity” (2019), “Exiled from the Womb” (2012), “Between Women” (2016), “Pathways” (2017), “The Tap on the Shoulder” (2015), “Vitali” (2008), “The Circus in Front of the House” (2007), and “Between Two Worlds: Women’s Doctor Tales” (2005). His works appear in several anthologies and literary magazines in the United States and Romania. He is co-translator into Romanian of “Naming the Nameless: An Anthology of Contemporary American Poetry” (2006).

Finalist in the Romanian National Fiction Prize in 2005 for his best-selling fiction and memoir «Between Two Worlds: Tales of Woman Doctor» and recipient of the 2005 International Library of Poets Award, member of the International Literary Movement «Poets of the World», (Poetas del Mundo), The International Library of Poets, American PEN Center, The Poetry Society of America, The Guild of Romanian Literary Writers.

 

Public interventions:

Adrian Sangeorzan was a guest of the International Poetry Festival in Granada, Nicaragua (2018), and of the International Book Fair in Frankfurt, Germany (2022), from Gothenburg 2014, guest of the International Festival «Days and Nights of Literature», an event organized by the Union of Romanian Writers in 2007 and 2011. As a poet, he was invited by Arizona State University (2008) Meacham Writers’ Workshop to teach poetrynat the University of Chattanooga Tennessee and Univesitad Redlands California.

Adrian Sangeorzan participated in Razvan Georgescu Florin Iepan’s documentary film Daughters of the Decree (2004) based on oral testimonies and documents about the pro-natalist and abortionist policy of the Romanian Communist Party during the Ceausecsu regime.

 

He has readings in the United States and Romania: Cornelia Street Café, Arizona State University, Columbia University- International House, Romanian Cultural Institute of New York, Hoboken Institute of Technology, United Nations New York, etc.

 

Adrian Sangeorzan’s poems were published in the Arabic literary magazine Phoenician Bird 2019 and in several literary magazines in Colombia, Romania, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, West Bengal, USA.
